Progress for all
Hard knowledge and the quest for public good

In this Oration, titled ‘Progress for all: hard knowledge and the quest for public good’, Professor Attila Brungs FTSE, Vice-Chancellor and President of UNSW, will probe the dynamics and disruptions of our global future and how ‘hard knowledge’ in engineering, science and technology can galvanise solutions to growing disparities and inequities. Professor Brungs will canvass the role of education, research and the ‘trusted expert’ in enabling equity of access, opportunity and success. The 2024 Chaikin Oration will be given in UNSW’s 75th anniversary year, as the University reaffirms its commitment to positive global impact and progress for all.

The Chaikin Oration, named after the late Professor Malcolm Chaikin AO OBE FTSE, personified the impact that academia, learning and education can have on the world. His pioneering work in industrial waste treatment, recycling and desalination demonstrates the critical role that research plays in shaping wider conversations and action regarding critical issues – sustainability in this case. Chaikin’s story illustrates the importance and huge opportunities for universities to look beyond their own walls. In the context of increased competition across the sector, his focus on collaboration was markedly progressive.

Join us in person or online on Tuesday 19 September in Sydney to celebrate Professor Attila Brungs FTSE as our 2024 Chaikin Orator.
