Strategic advice

ATSE’s submission considers that a coordinated response is needed to adopt and regulate AI and ensure continued public participation in AI-related decisions. AI can grow industries to be globally competitive and create new and high-paying jobs.

This collection of short papers developed by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) and the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) at The University of Adelaide offers an insight into the world of responsible artificial intelligence and the opportunities this presents to Australia.

ATSE supports TEQSA’s draft principles and propositions. They will provide a strong foundation for the development of new assessment practices as AI evolves.

Unlike many traditional industries, AI development requires comparatively lower upfront capital and is less constrained by geographical factors, allowing the sector to quickly move and adapt to ever changing market conditions.

South Australia’s defence, space and food and wine industries provide a unique opportunity to engage with AI development, and previous investments in the Australian Institute of Machine Learning and Lot Fourteen have positioned the state well to take up these opportunities.

To fully realise the benefits of generative AI, both students and teachers must be confident in its usage. Students must develop the skills to engage with this emerging technology throughout their education, and teachers should be supported with professional development to improve their pedagogy with the power of generative AI.

The accelerating development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) brings with it the possibility of great change in human society, impacting how we live and work, improving productivity, supporting learning and offering new entertainment possibilities.
